A Turning Point

We have written numerous posts about the food and comfortable life we are living here. We've talked about restaurants, massages, trips, etc.

Last night, we had decided we would have a date at a nicer restaurant- one of our favorite things to do. The food was good, but nothing that was unbelievably good- like say $100 good. $100 is exactly what we spent and it was a huge wake up call.

We felt so guilty that we spent that much money on one meal. It would be something to do that for a special occasion like a birthday (Don't forget Heather's 30th will be coming up in October!), but we spent that on a random Saturday night dinner. $100!!! one meal!!!!

In case you were wondering, we had a thyme lamb, red wine infused tenderloin, pecan treacle, and a fancy chocolate cake. It was not close to being worth $100.

By the way, we shouldn't have to threaten you each time we post a new blog to get a few comments. Is anyone still out there?

I guiltily admit that I spent $85 last night on dinner in New Orleans (we did take two people out, though, one birthday and the other bought all our drinks at the bar). My only defense is that we've been living off MREs and it was the first hot meal in days and boy, did it feel nice to sit down for an actual dinner! I'm glad you guys are enjoying your time there anyway and you should treat yourselves once in a while!

can I get a turning point for just a hundred bucks? people live entire lives never asking the questions that you're asking, never engaing in the tension of social and economic justice. I think it's admirable that even though you have been plopped into the lap of luxury, you are challenging yourselves to live the bigger questions, posed by each and every beggar you pass. Keep on keeping! I'll take revelation for $100!

I just wanted you to know, Matt and Heather, that I'm out here and still missing you Matt. I love reading about you new life and have to admit that $100 on a dinner seems excessive, but when else are you going to have the chance to do all of this. Treat yourself! You both deserve it. Sending Bellwether Love...Angie

Hi Heather and Matt,

yes, we're still out here! I've been reading your posts with great interest and really enjoyed your video (although I was hoping for a video message from the two of you from a land far far away). In fact, coming home tonight, I thought of you on the train and I went to your blog as soon as I could. I've been curious, since I didn't hear from you guys in a while. Sorry this is my first comment.

Please don't beat yourself up over a hundred bucks. What you guys are doing right now is incredible and you'll remember your adventures for the rest of your life. So, spread out that expense over a lifetime of remembering that date and now it seems like an excellent investment!

Keep on blogging and post a video message, ok? Talk soon,
- Stefan.
